Now, if this were some filthy liberal -- I'm sure it wouldn't do too much in the way of raising the ire of GOP commentators, but this is one their own shining knights in moral armor. I, as a filthy liberal, could give a damn if he had an affair. If he's elected to govern I only care if he, y'know, sucks at governing. I don't want to know who he's banging -- seriously. As a matter of fact the day that he admitted to his affair I said this: "I really don't want to watch wall-to-wall coverage of this for the next week. Why can't a white woman go missing?" That white woman was apparently Michael Jackson.
But seriously, why do republicans care? I don't in the least bit, but I guess when you build your organization on "christian values" (read as: removing the rights of minorities to marry/serve in the military) you're obligated to play the moral police.
Conservative columnist/fire-breathing-succubus Michelle Malkin wrote in her (significantly less awesome) blog: "If you can't honor your marriage vows, how can you expect voters to trust you to honor your damned oath of office?"
Well for one you typically don't go bumpin' uglies in other oaths of offices? I kid. But seriously, why do we care? Or why do you care? The Prime Minister of Italy (Silvio Berlusconi) has:
1. Alleged ties with the Mafia
2. Made rude gestures at international conferences behind the backs of foreign prime ministers
3. Told an Italian party representative he'd marry her if he wan't already married while he wasin a very public place.
4. Played "hide-and-seek" with the German Chancellor
5. Said that people left homeless by an earthquake should "view their experience as a camping weekend"
6. Attended the birthdays of 18 year old models while skipping out of the 18th birthdays of his sons
7. Been accused of "favoring" prostitution
8. Been accused of several affairs
9. Thrown kittens into a woodchipper
Okay, maybe he didn't throw kittens into a woodchipper -- but you get the point. He's an ass. He also is serving his third term as Italian Prime Minister. Why? Because they care about how he governs and not his infidelities/insensitivities. Oh, and there's that whole thing about him owning several media outlets -- that does create some positive press for one. Okay, so horrible/comical example. Still: I don't care about who the politicians are porking, and neither should you.
Awesome:

The only porking we should be concerned with is what Congress does to perfectly good bills. God almighty. To answer your question: the reason the media covers the infidelities of public officials is that they know that most people don't actually care about government. By putting up the smoke screen of lying, cheating, and promiscuity the media is able to prevent the public from accidentally realizing what the government is doing. If you want to find out what the government is actually doing, read my blog at newsfarm.blogspot.com. (sorry Nathan, had to plug myself :P)
ReplyDeleteTook me a sec to realize who you were, haha.
ReplyDeleteYes, the Cap and Trade bill was absolutely neutered in the wee hours of the morning and then rubber-stamp'd through the House before anyone had a fleeting chance at reading what was in there. That's not much to ask for a bill that fundamentally changes the way we do business in th country -- that you read legislation before you approve of it.
The idea of folks "voting for the guy they'd like to have a beer with" is equally absurd and I got equally tired of watching it in the run up to the Conventions last year. He can be the assiest ass wearing a ass/elephant campaign button for all I care -- you can be an ass and still excel at what you do. I should know -- I'm a chronic incurable ass.
