Today a Levaquin prescription slid by me and I just pointed at it and said "wrong." The dosage didn't fit any diagnosis because it was either too short in duration or too low. The UVC intern at my site decided to throw down fisticuffs on the basis that "you don't know the diagnosis" and "you see it all the time." I tossed her a DIH and asked her politely to show me a diagnosis that fit the therapy. Woopsy, looks like there wasn't one. I know everything doesn't have to be dosed with vector calculus -- but sometimes there's just a better way to do things. UVC intern -- you ain't got shit on me.
So today I learned of someone in my family withdrawing both their children from school to be homeschooled. Now there are several problems with this, one is that their mom has a GED and therefore not qualified to pull off this operation. The bigger problem is that they withdrew their children from school because their teacher is "queer." If he was just a little odd, I wouldn't be writing this blog entry, but the implication is they don't feel comfortable with a homosexual teaching their kids. I'm just throwing this one out there -- this is one of the few minorities that its still apparently "okay to hate" in mainstream America. In fact, its still okay to legislate against this and one other minority -- Atheists. Here's your DYK (no, I don't need to buy a vowel, I'm abbreviating 'did you know') for the day: did you know that there are several states that explicitly prohibit atheists from running for office? Kind of the same as taking away the rights of homosexuals to marry (an inalienable right), except no one gives a shit about atheists apparently. Also, in one study when subjects where asked "Who would you be most upset if your child chose to marry?" Atheists came in first by a mile. I guess its only separation of church and state for those who have a "church"?
In terms of current events (as if today's post wasn't newsy enough): A group is calling for an instant R-rating to be given to any movie that depicts someone smoking a cigarette
What the hell? If you look at the article, they just start making up statistics like "Research has shown that one-third to one-half of all young smokers in the United States can be attributed to smoking these youth see in movies." Firstly, how the hell do you even measure that, and secondly its not like this move would halve teenage smoking -- it'd just be hella annoying. Its not even like this was an article I had to dig for either -- I heard the story on CNN as I was leaving for my CRAPPE. I'm sure it barely edged out the fact that North Korea just tested a nuclear weapon and has fired 6 short-range test missiles in the past week. There's worse problems to solve, there's other ways to approach this problem, and there's definitely more worthy news stories.
